Project update for the Columbia Road Transportation Action Plan
The primary objective of the Columbia Road Transportation Action Plan is to enhance transportation connectivity for the surrounding neighborhoods.
The project aims to preserve two-way vehicular travel along this 2.4 mile corridor between Franklin Park and Moakley Park. [The City] will also create a linear park, repurposing the existing median, sidewalks, and improving transportation connectivity for the surrounding neighborhoods. As Columbia Road has been identified as part of Boston’s High Crash Network, overall traffic safety will be a primary concern on this corridor.
The City is also interested in transforming the corridor into a greenway. [They] will plant a significant number of trees that will provide shade, filter air pollutants, and improve the overall comfort in multiple sections of Columbia Road.

The City of Boston Public Works Department scope of work for this $3 million project included pedestrian accessibility, upgraded traffic signals, new sidewalks, tree plantings, new street lighting, and way-finding signage. Adding synchronized signals will help with traffic calming and pedestrian safety, and public amenities include spaces for future public art.
